Michael Carrick about Man utd

Carrick arrived at Old Trafford in 2006 for what many believed to be an unwarranted fee of ₤18million (actually ₤13.5million plus add-ons). Needless to say, he has had his work cut out convincing United fans he is worth the price tag.The 26-year-old was a regular starter during his first season under Sir Alex Ferguson, yet he failed to really hit the heights he reached as the creative thrust of Tottenham’s midfield. It was thought Carrick would slip down the pecking order following the arrivals of Owen Hargreaves and Anderson last summer, and for a while it seemed that would indeed be the case. But an impressive run of form saw him generally preferred alongside Paul Scholes during the last half of the term.

The ex-West Ham youth was a vital contributor in United’s domestic and European triumph; however, many remain unconvinced about his value to the Red Devils, given he often takes the back-seat when playing with Scholes. But that does not bother Carrick one bit, and he is thrilled to be part of a team that he hopes will successfully defend their Premier League and Champions League titles this season.

"Knowing what the club is about, I would say there is nowhere better," he said. "Everything that surrounds the club is moving in the right direction and now we want to build on that."The best thing I have done is to come here. For me, it is a no-brainer that you would want to stay. We have to use what we have achieved and build on it. We drive ourselves on and we expect so much of each other and ourselves."People who have nothing to do with us know what we are capable of and that means more European Cups and championships."

Villa to Liverpool

Villa’s stunning showing at EURO, where he was top scorer with four goals as Spain claimed a long-overdue international crown, has seen him become perhaps the hottest property on the transfer market. The 26-year-old is tipped to leave los Che after a disappointing season that saw them flirt with relegation, although new coach Unai Emery is desperate to keep him at the Mestalla.

Liverpool have always been mentioned among the lead candidates to capture Villa’s signature, given the impressive link the ex-Real Zaragoza hitman formed with Reds ace Fernando Torres in Austria and Switzerland. And now Benitez has confirmed he is intent on raiding his old hunting ground to bring 'El Guaje' to Anfield, although he understands his former club might not be willinge sellers.

"We have Torres, Voronin, Kuyt, Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker," Benitez said. "But we will try to bring in another option. "Villa we know all about. He is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult."Villa's potential acquisition raises questions about what position Gerrard will play next season, as the Liverpool skipper had begun to form an impressive attacking partnership with Torres last term.
